Navigating the world as a neurodivergent person can be exhausting, especially when it feels like you constantly have to explain how your brain works, or even feel the need to mask your authentic self - we get it.
At our practice, you don't have to mask, or shrink yourself to fit into a specific mold. You're welcome just as you are. Therapy should feel like a space where you can breathe, process, and just feel safe to be seen.
What is "Neurodivergent - Friendly" Actually Mean?
According to Innovative Resources, neurodivergent-friendly is a term used to explain that the systems and environments around us provide inclusive, accommodating care to each persons individual needs, expectations, and care. In other words - spaces where everyone "wins."
Often, in environments that are not neurodivergent-friendly, folks may feel that their needs or accommodations are overlooked or unmet. Some examples of inflexible factors in a space might include high noise levels, lack of open-plan areas, or overwhelming visuals and graphics that can contribute to sensory overload.
Neurodivergence in The Therapy Room
Neurodivergent-Friendly Therapists can help create spaces that offer inclusivity, comfortability, and safety for neurodivergent folx in these ways:
Affirming Language & Awareness - We’re intentional with our language, hoping to highlight the strengths of neurodiversity in our sessions!
Flexible communication styles - Whether you prefer email, text, or phone calls, we’ll communicate in ways that feel easiest and most accessible to you. No pressure to speak in ways that feel unnatural.
Collaboration on flexible or strict session structure based on the client's preferences - You set the pace!
Trauma-informed and identity-affirming approach - We understand that being neurodivergent often intersects with trauma, especially in systems that weren’t built with you in mind. Our approach honors all aspects of your identity.
Sensory-considerate office setup (lighting, seating, fidget-friendly) - Our office is thoughtfully designed with soft lighting, comfortable seating, and sensory friendly tools (like fidgets or weighted items) to help you feel at ease.
Open Dialogue - Whether it’s needing breaks, asking for clarity, or adjusting how we interact in session, we invite open conversation at any time.
Permission to Unmask - We honor your natural rhythms, communication style, and ways of being.
Types of Therapy We Offer
While our clinicians offer a wide range of therapeutic approaches tailored to each client’s unique needs, some of the common lenses we work from include:
Psychodynamic & Attachment-Based Therapy: We explore how early experiences (including invalidation or misunderstanding of your neurodivergence) impact self-worth, relationships, and how you show up in the world today.
Internal Family Systems (IFS): IFS is especially helpful for neurodivergent folks who’ve developed “parts” to cope with masking, rejection, or perfectionism. We gently help you connect with those parts and move toward inner compassion.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): EFT supports deeper connection—whether that’s in romantic relationships, friendships, or family—by helping you express needs and emotions in ways that feel safe and authentic.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Many neurodivergent individuals carry trauma from misdiagnosis, bullying, or feeling “too much.” EMDR helps process those experiences and release the emotional charge they still hold.
Somatic Therapy: Somatic work helps you tune into your body and nervous system—especially useful if you experience sensory overload, shutdowns, or have trouble staying grounded during stress.
Gottman Method: This communication-focused method can help neurodivergent couples (or ND–NT partnerships) navigate conflict and connection in ways that feel more clear, respectful, and emotionally attuned.

Next Steps: How to Start Therapy
Most clients will look through our website https://www.thecouchtherapy.org and read what we’re all about. You can even take our quiz to learn which therapist may be the best fit for you depending on your needs, personality preferences, and location.
This one might be scary but we promise, we’re not scary at all!! Once you find a therapist that you seem interested in, you can either email our office or you can book a free 15 minute consultation directly online. We use a software system that our various “schedule a consult” or “book now” buttons on our website will direct you to https://thecouchtherapy.clientsecure.me. It’s called Simple Practice. Once on that page, you will be able to see the availability of each of our therapists. Click on “I’m a New Client” and then the name of the therapist you’d like to meet with and choose a time that works best for you. Don’t see a time that works? Email our office care coordinator Janine at (www.info@thecouchtherapy.org) will work with you to find a time that works best. She will email our therapists directly to see if there’s any wiggle room in their schedule to get you in. She’s a retired teacher and loves to help people!
Step 3- Once you schedule a consultation, you’ll receive a secure link from Simple Practice and all you have to do is log on through your computer, tablet, or phone at the time of your appointment and your therapist will meet you on the other side of the screen. If something stood out to you about our profile, we’re honored and excited to meet with you! We’ll introduce ourselves and ask you what you’re looking for in a therapist and what you’re hoping to work on. We’ll be transparent with you about our style of therapy, our schedule, our fee, etc. If we’re not the best fit, we have someone else in mind for you and we’ll help bridge that transition
Step 4- Ideally, it’s a match! We will offer you available times to schedule an intake session with us. If it’s not the perfect match, again, we’ll get you to the right person.
We’d be honored to join you on the mental health journey to becoming a better you. Please reach out if you have any questions at all.
Love,
The Couch Therapy
