Did you ever wonder if you can talk to your therapist about sex? Or how to bring up a question about sex with your therapist? Therapist should care about the holistic perspective of you. Sexuality is apart of your human experience, and at The Couch Therapy, we want to honor all parts of you.
In a study of 798 clients a large percentage of participants reported that they didn't want to be open and honest with their therapist about sexuality due to shame. Many clients noted shame being derived from how they worried they'd be perceived by their therapist as well as felt that their was not an opportunity of how they could bring up sex or sexuality with their therapist.
Why sex could be important to discuss in therapy:
Processing past sexual trauma, religious/cultural sexual shame, and anxieties or fears related to sex
Exploring sexual orientation, gender identity, kinks, BDSM dynamics, and alternative relationship styles like ethical non-monogamy
Unpacking how self-worth impacts sexual confidence and functioning
Exploring communication and trust within relationship
Identifying how we learned about sex, and why it matters
Emily Morehead, our co-owner of The Couch Therapy, had the opportunity to give a TedTalk about this very topic. She debunks myths about sex, why what we learn about sex matters, and starts the conversation on how we can improve consent culture, trust, voice, bodily autonomy, and advocacy. At the Couch Therapy, we follow all clients lead in therapy sessions and we also believe that when we offer consent as we navigate conversation about sex or sexuality that our clients can also practice consent with.
