Does EMDR help with anxiety?

In the 1980s, Frances Shapiro first created a psychotherapy approach called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to treat veterans with symptoms of PTSD. Since the 1980s, EMDR has widely expanded to be utilized for many health conditions, including but not limited to, anxiety. 


Here’s how EMDR can help with anxiety:

  1. Processing Distressing Memories: EMDR helps individuals process distressing memories or experiences that may contribute to anxiety. Through reprocessing these memories, the symptoms of anxiety can be reduced. 

  2. Desensitization: EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help individuals become less sensitive to distressing memories. This process helps to reduce the intensity of the anxiety associated with these memories.

  3. Improved Emotional Regulation: As individuals process traumatic or anxiety-provoking memories, they often develop better emotional regulation skills. This helps them manage anxiety more effectively in daily life.

  4. Improved Self-Worth: EMDR also involves helping individuals develop and strengthen positive beliefs about themselves and their ability to handle anxiety. This can improve self-esteem and resilience.

  5. Mindfulness and Relaxation: With EMDR, clients are taught relaxation and grounding techniques, which can be applied to distress outside of sessions, and further alleviate anxiety.
